2011 Tampa Bay Homeschool Conference

We’re getting ready for the 2011 Tampa Bay Homeschool Conference! Last year we attended this conference and we’re glad to be there again this year. The mid-year conferences are a great way to stay energized about homeschooling and also to get a head start on the upcoming new school year.

This year we will be introducing our new Safety Cards!! They come in a 4-pack for the child, parents, grandparents and/or babysitter to carry. It’s a priceless tool to have on hand when your child is lost or hurt!

Stop by our booth in the Rotunda to get your new 2011-12 ID’s! Of course, we’ll have special discounts at the conference, too!

See you there!

Notes from The Homeschool Resource Meetup

We had a great first meetup this week! Dave “Doc” Dockery from The Tampa Bay Computer Society talked to us about computer safety on the internet and, specifically, on Facebook.

Here’s the notes I took:

Computer Viruses

Do NOT click on any virus warning!!! This is typically a way to actually infect your computer – you’re clean until you click and that’s when the virus loads. (This is how I got infected a few months ago.)

Microsoft Security Essentials – This is a great anti-virus software and it’s FREE!! You can download it here.

One problem with anti-virus software that resides on your computer is that viruses can attack it. One way to be sure your unit is clean is to use BitDefender Online Scanner in addition. You can do that here.

If you do get a virus, a System Restore may be able to git rid of it. Do not keep using the unit for days before you address the virus because the System Restore only goes back so far. As each new day is saved, the oldest saved version is deleted. Be sure to have your unit worked on ASAP before you lose the ability to use the System Restore. That may result in a more costly solution.

Windows Security

Run your computer in Standard vs Admin OR at least use a password on your Admin account. That will prevent a virus program from being loaded without your consent.

You can put Parental Controls on the standard accounts that can prevent the activity of the user. I understand you can even set the time the user can log in. One of the best controls is to disable the ability to to download programs. That’s another way you can limit your exposure to viruses.

Facebook Security

Get rid of all your apps (Farmville, Happy Faces, etc.)! These are outside applications that are subject to virus infections.

If your friends play games that you don’t want to see on your wall, go to the entry and hover your cursor over the top-right portion and an “X” will appear. Click on it and you can choose the hide that particular app. I love this feature!

Smart Phones

Turn off your GPS if you’re not using it for maps. You can be tracked by this, especially if you’re on sites like 4square or Gowalla. Just what a thief needs to know – you’re away from home and he’ll be able to see when you’re coming home and he’ll have plenty of time.

Well, that does it, I think! Like I said, it was a great evening and I look forward to next month!

Time for sewing?!

Who takes time for themselves? I used to LOVE sewing. Ok, I still do, but I used to actually sew! I’m just too busy and have been for years. (I’m sure you can identify!)

As a teenager, though, I made most of my clothes and loved mixing patterns together…a sleeve from this one, collar from that one, etc. I could spend hours in the pattern dept and then there was the fabric. I loved walking along and imagining what I could make from all the different fabrics.

After purchasing the patterns and fabric, I couldn’t wait to get started on my project. I remember staying up well past my parents going to bed so I could finish my garment. Quite often, I’d wear it the next day!

When I got a job and then married Mike, I had less time for sewing. I did bust out the sewing machine when I needed maternity clothes, though. It certainly helped keep the expense of the new wardrobe down! I found baby clothes too tiny to work with but I did enjoy making the nursery curtains and blankets.

Over the years, I’ve kept my sewing machine but it tends to only get used when curtains are needed. I actually made our first convention backdrop for HomeSchool ID! That was a huge project but well worth it. We used it for 5 or 6 years before “graduating” to a more professional version.

A few years ago, I decided to make time to sew again. As I was looking online, I ran across the website for this sewing expo, http://www.sewingexpo.com/Home.aspx, and the timing was right as the event was only a few weeks away.

I went to the expo and was shocked! So many changes!! Patterns now had Spanish on them, sewing machine technology changed and they threaded differently and sergers were everywhere – even some of the terms had changed! I sat in on some of the classes and was a bit overwhelmed but still excited to be in the world of sewing again.

I haven’t incorporated sewing into my life like I’d like to but I still have the desire. (Maybe when grandbabies start arriving!) I encourage you to remember your love and make time for it whether it be sewing, crafts, crochet, horseback riding…it doesn’t really matter. What matters is making time for yourself – you’ll be refreshed and ready for family-time!

You can even have fun teaching it to your children. I’m sure if I’d had a girl I would’ve been sewing more and would’ve loved teaching her to sew like my mother taught me. Sharing your hobby with your child(ren) is a great way to build a relationship with them.

For those of you that are interested in sewing and quilting, I encourage you to go to the Sewing Expo, and take your daughters, too. Maybe it’ll rekindle your love and inspire your days!

Happy sewing!!

Surviving on One Income

I remember the day Mike and I decided to homeschool. It was May 2000. We had been deciding whether or not to homeschool. How were we going to do it? Could we afford it? We felt the Lord was leading us to homeschooling and decided to embrace it and make it work.

We were excited – we’d actually be taking control of our family and not be left to the whims of the public and private school system any longer.

We were scared – I was jumping into homeschooling with a 6th and 8th grader – what was I thinking??

And then there was the job I was giving up. How were we going to survive? Were we really doing the right thing? Then it hit me – Was my job, and the physical items it provided for, really more important than my sons? I could whole-heartedly say, “No way!”

We were preparing for ministry – ministry to our sons and to our family. We committed, as husband and wife, to put our sons first no matter how difficult it would be financially. We didn’t know how, but we knew the Lord would bless our decision and provide for us. And he did!!

Of course, finances were tight, but we discovered benefits of me not going to work. My gas consumption decreased! No more stressful traffic to and from work. No more wondering if the boys were ok after school. No more business wardrobe needed. No more dry cleaning!

We had already sold our cars and said “goodbye” to our car payments. We purchased older vehicles with cash. Since there was no loan, we were able to drop the full-coverage insurance and only carry the minimum required. That was a HUGE savings!

I eventually ventured into selling on ebay. I really enjoyed the shopping! I loved turning a $50 shopping spree at yard sales into $400 – $500 sales on ebay.

A couple of years later, Mike and I started HomeSchool ID. We had found something that was needed in our life as homeschoolers and found a way to fill it…and do it in a way that helped other homeschooling families, too!

Mike wrote an article that has some great tips in this area, too: http://hubpages.com/hub/Homeschooling-on-One-Income

I pray these tips will help you in your family’s homeschooling journey! Be sure to check out Mike’s article and let us know what you think. Also, please share what you’ve done to save money and/or make an income at home. Keep an eye out for more articles from Mike, too!

Earn Free HomeSchool ID’s!!!

Yea! After tossing the idea around for a while and talking with some of our card holders, we came up with an awesome Referral Program!!! It doesn’t cost you anything and, as you’re helping your homeschooling friends, you’ll also be helping yourself. It’s a win-win for everyone!

Too often, when we finally find that great product, we imagine ourselves telling all our friends about it. Then life happens… and days, weeks and even months go by and we realize we haven’t told anyone, yet. We rationalize our friends don’t want to be bothered by our sales pitch anyway. If they wanted that item they’d come ask about it, anyway. Right?

Wrong. In reality, HomeSchool Student and Educator ID’s are products many homeschoolers don’t even know about…so how can they ask about it? It’s up to you to share this important information so they, too, can benefit from Student Discounts, be protected in times of Truancy Issues, be able to Travel with Ease, etc. And remember the Educator Discounts, too!

For detailed information about the new Referral Program, click here.

Leave a comment below and share how you plan to help your friends save money! (ie: “I will tell my homeschool friends at church!”)

Look, We’re Blogging Now!

I can honestly say I never thought I’d be blogging! I’ve resisted it for a very long time.

Mrs. Tinsley, my 7th grade English teacher, would be proud! Her students had to keep a journal. I didn’t like writing so I put it off and would write like mad at the beginning of class. Since I wasn’t putting much thought into it, quite often she got a review of my lunch. Poor thing. She handled it well, though.

I promise I’ll put more thought into HomeSchool ID’s blog. It won’t necessarily be the most thought-provoking but we’ll have fun learning about, musing about and exploring homeschool issues. And I look forward to reading your comments.

For the sake of the blog, we’re expanding the scope of homeschooling to include the family as a whole. Some of the subjects we’ll explore together are:

  • Children
  • Finances
  • Relationships
  • Teaching
  • Encouragement

Mike will help write now and then, too. I’m amazed sometimes how his perspective can give him such a different spin on a subject. I’m sure you’ve noticed that with your husband, too.

We’d love to hear from you! In the comment section, let us know what topics you’d like us to cover.

Let us know if you’d like to be a guest blogger. If you have something to share with the homeschool community, e-mail us at amy@homeschoolid.com.

Well, I guess that’s it for now. I’ll be blogging more soon!
